Two Good Online Video Games | Larry Ferlazzo's Websites of the Day...: "Here are two neat online video games that can be used for language learning and which may, with luck, may not even be blocked by school content filters. I’ve written about how I use these games, along with their walkthroughs (instructions on how to win), with my English Language Learner students. In both of these games, be sure to click the yellow bar in the lower left hand side of the game to turn the language to English:

Images from the History of Medicine (NLM)

This is the coolest collection of medical pictures, some very old and strange, that I have ever seen. You can actually embed collections in your blog or wiki. A warning though, some of the images might not be suitable for younger students.

Everloop

Everloop: "Built for tweens, Everloop is the next step beyond social networking, to what we call social looping. Tweens really shouldn't be on open, social networks. Everloop's 'social looping' platform - the first of its kind -- creates a privacy loop around kids' connections. It's totally free. And kids are free from anonymous intruders. They can participate in collaborative learning and school projects, share information about their sports teams and clubs, play games, customize their profile pages, and communicate in real time with friends they know who are part of their loop."

Comic Creator - ReadWriteThink

Comic Creator - ReadWriteThink: "The Comic Creator invites students to compose their own comic strips for a variety of contexts (prewriting, pre- and postreading activities, response to literature, and so on). The organizers focus on the key elements of comic strips by allowing students to choose backgrounds, characters, and props, as well as to compose related dialogue (shown at left). This versatile tool can be used by students from kindergarten through high school, for purposes ranging from learning to write dialogue to an in-depth study of a formerly neglected genre. The tool is easy to use, made even easier with the Comic Strip Planning Sheet, a printable PDF that comic creators can use to draft and revise their work before creating and printing their final comics. After completing their comic, students have the ability to print out and illustrate their final versions for feedback and assessment."

Orca Search

Orca Search: "Welcome to the Orca Search home page!

Scientists would like to know more about Orcas, also known as killer whales. Because of your interest in whales, you have been chosen to be a member of the research team that will study these interesting sea creatures.

As a member of the research team, your assignment is to gather as much information about killer whales, from as many sources as you can, before your team ventures out to observe them in their ocean environment.

You will learn about the tools scientists need to research killer whales and you will use some of these research tools to find useful information about them.
You will learn about wild whales being held in captivity and how you feel about that issue.
You will complete your research about killer whales by preparing a research report that can be submitted to the research team.
And, you will be considered an official ORCA SEARCHER by the time you complete this research.
Before you begin your search, you might want to prepare yourself by

looking up the word 'research' in a dictionary, and
looking up 'research scientist' in an encyclopedia or other resource."
