Free Technology for Teachers: 10 Sites and Services I'm Using This Semester

Free Technology for Teachers: 10 Sites and Services I'm Using This Semester: "Every year in the course of writing this blog I look at and try out hundreds of new services that educators can use. So it's not surprising that usually after I give a "best of the web" presentation at a school or conference people ask me which services I'm actually using in my classroom. The answer changes from semester to semester, but here are the ones my students and I are currently using. This list is in no particular order other than how I thought of them as I wrote out the list."

Projects: A better way to work in classroom groups: "We’re calling this new feature Projects. Whenever you have a particular assignment or activity, you can create a project for it, then define teams of members, each with its own unique pages, files, and permissions. Team content (that is, pages and files) are grouped together, separate from the main area of the wiki. That way, students in teams can do their group work completely independently from other teams."

The folks at the Kentucky Virtual Library know this and put together an interactive map of the research process for students. The map, titled How To Do Research, walks students through the research process from start to finish with every step along the way. One of the things about this map that school librarians will like is that it is not focused solely on web research. How To Do Research includes a good section about using library catalogs, books, and magazines. "

Download details: SyncToy 2.1: "There are files from all kinds of sources that we want to store and manage. Files are created by our digital cameras, e-mail, cell phones, portable media players, camcorders, PDAs, and laptops. Increasingly, computer users are using different folders, drives, and even different computers (such as a laptop and a desktop) to store, manage, retrieve and view files. Yet managing hundreds or thousands of files is still largely a manual operation. In some cases it is necessary to regularly get copies of files from another location to add to primary location; in other cases there is a need to keep two storage locations exactly in sync. Some users manage files manually, dragging and dropping from one place to another and keeping track of whether the locations are synchronized in their heads. Other users may use two or more applications to provide this functionality."

The Authentic History Center

The Authentic History Center: "The Authentic History Center is comprised of artifacts and sounds from American popular culture. It was created to teach that the everyday objects in society have authentic historical value and reflect the social consciousness of the era that produced them. Authentic also means conforming to fact, and therefore worthy of trust, reliance, or belief. To meet this definition by presenting an authentic interpretation of American history is our ultimate goal. When a collection is whole enough to be considered an authentic representation of the sources produced about an historical event, they are presented via interpretive essay."

For example, when you think of London, you might picture the iconic clock tower or the big Ferris wheel. You may not always remember the names of those landmarks, but you can visualize them in your mind. To make it easier for you to find images in situations like these, you can now use Google Images with sorting.

When you search for [london], by default you’ll see image results ranked by relevance. Click on “Sort by subject” in the left-hand panel and you’ll see images organized into categories that will narrow down your search and help you find the exact image of London that you want."

Student PLN’s: Rules For Engagement

Student PLN’s: Rules For Engagement: "Technology creates a false sense of anonymity and students will often need guidance on proper online behavior. We cannot assume that just because they act appropriately in person that they will know how to respectfully engage with one another online. I know of teachers who are hesitant to use social networking tools because of their fear of inappropriate student behavior. As 21st century educators, I would suggest that it is our responsibility to use these tools in our classroom as a way to teach these skills. If we don’t teach them, who will? Students need an opportunity to practice appropriate behavior in a safe and secure environment and with proper guidance."

Together, they felt an urgent need to promote perceptions of young people as valued resources, not problems, and to advocate for learning that engages students as knowledge creators and not simply test takers. Just as urgent, they believed, was the need to bring youth voices to policy debates about school, society, and world affairs"

When a collection is whole enough to be considered an authentic representation of the sources produced about an historical event, they are presented via interpretive essay. Until then, incomplete collections are presented as digital archives without comment for individual study. Additionally, a large audio archive of speeches and news broadcasts are presented for students to experience a level of historical authenticity distinct from written sources."

Comic Creator - ReadWriteThink

Comic Creator - ReadWriteThink: "The Comic Creator invites students to compose their own comic strips for a variety of contexts (prewriting, pre- and postreading activities, response to literature, and so on). The organizers focus on the key elements of comic strips by allowing students to choose backgrounds, characters, and props, as well as to compose related dialogue (shown at left). This versatile tool can be used by students from kindergarten through high school, for purposes ranging from learning to write dialogue to an in-depth study of a formerly neglected genre. The tool is easy to use, made even easier with the Comic Strip Planning Sheet, a printable PDF that comic creators can use to draft and revise their work before creating and printing their final comics. After completing their comic, students have the ability to print out and illustrate their final versions for feedback and assessment."

What’s the ONE Piece of Tech Advice You’d Give a Techphobic Teacher? – SimpleK12

What’s the ONE Piece of Tech Advice You’d Give a Techphobic Teacher? – SimpleK12: "Kylie Daemmrich said:
Education is the name of the game in a classroom and it’s okay if the teacher is learning right along with the students. Techphobic teachers negatively impact student learning when they don’t incorporate tech into the lessons. We ask students to step outside their comfort zones daily as they learn new things. It sets a good example for students when we model the same for them. Be honest and tell them you’re learning it right along with them. They are very supportive and catch on much quicker than most adults. They help each other and can help the teacher as well. Teachers need to stay up to date with technology appropriate for the grade they are teaching. After all, would you go to a doctor or dentist who wasn’t up to date with the latest learning and technology in their field? Would you want your car, appliance or furnace engineered and manufactured by people using know-how and technology from twenty years ago and afraid to move ahead? Teachers want respect but then some choose to not move along with the times. Time must be made, yes your own time out of school, to explore tech tools and progress in your learning."
